Every now and then we must check our lives to see what things prioritize our lives. Does our prayer contain matters like the Psalmist prays here or is it always focused on the things of this world?
No doubt, we must pray for our daily needs, but do spiritual matters have priority is what we must ask ourselves. Day by day, month by month, year by year, is our prayer life, our worship, our meditation of the Word and our working for the Kingdom of God improving and increasing?
Sadly, many do not grow spiritually, because there are many thorns that impede their growth. Jesus spoke specifically of this in the parable of the Sower......
The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. (Matthew 13:22)
The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. (Luke 8:14)
Jesus had a piece of advice for his disciples who were worried about how their needs would be met. After all, they had left everything and set out to follow the Lord.
He said, "So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear." For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:31-33)
We can learn much from this.
