The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem: "Meaningless! Meaningless!" says the Teacher. "Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless." (Ecclesiastes 1:1, 2)
If we take these verses and try to interpret it just as they were, it would mean that everything in this world is meaningless. But if we take all the chapters of this book together and see what the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem is saying, we can know that what he is trying to put forth is that without God, everything is meaningless in our lives. The word occurs as many as 35 times in this book and surely, the son of David, king in Jerusalem, most probably Solomon, after having seen and experiencing things in this world, came to the conclusion that everything is meaningless without God. If we come to the New Testament and apply the same verses, we can say that everything is meaningless in a persons life without Jesus Christ.
The search and quest for God has been going on for centuries and the search for the true and living God still continues by them who have not yet experienced Christ. There are some who have found and have relationship with some sort of a God, yet are not sure that they have eternal salvation. But the Bible is very clear and states that salvation is provided to mankind because of the atoning work of Jesus Christ on the cross and anyone who believes and confesses that and lives according to the Word of God is granted entry into the kingdom of heaven. Without God, man's existence is meaningless and without Jesus Christ, whatever we gain in this world becomes meaningless in the end.
If you feel everything is meaningless in life, accept Jesus as your Savior and live according to the Word of God, the Bible, and you will find meaning and purpose in life. If you have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and are living according to the Word of God, God's promise is that you will receive eternal life when you die or are translated into heaven at Rapture.
For them who have accepted Jesus as Savior and yet feel that life is meaningless because of the circumstances that they are going through, the Bible advices,
"Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." (Hebrews 12:2)
"If we endure, we will also reign with him....." (2 Timothy 2:12)
